Koltan Macdonald’s Volvo drift cars have become somewhat of an internet icon. We we’re already subscribers for his YouTube channel so we we’re stoked when he approached us with regards getting some baseline numbers on his current “Goldie” 740 Drift car.
What started as a half hour Dyno session turned into a 3 day adventure. His baseline testing showed lots of room for improvement and so we had to look at our possible tuning options. Koltan mentioned that his current setup was already running a “chipped” ECU so we set about pulling it apart and doing a read of the EPROM and finding some Definition files.
Having never tuned the LH2.4 and having to rely on third-hand definition files and information it took quite some testing time to figure out exactly what Ignition and Fuel tables we’re in use and the various knock-on effects that tuning those tables had. With all the tables verified we we’re able to make some changes for his modified MAF, Injector’s and Increased boost pressure and this got us close enough to do the final tweaks in Real-Time Emulation.
Our initial thought was towards the ECUMaster DET3 piggyback unit – this would have allowed me both Fueling & Ignition Control and may still be an option in the future to add things like a 2-Step Style limiter and Switchable Boost Control and Ignition/Fuel Maps. There are advantages to both and maybe this is something we’d look at adding in the future.
Koltan was great to work with, and his knowledge of all things Volvo was invaluable in unlocking the potential in his Turbo Volvo. He has a great passion for what he does and has a natural talent for Drifting. It didn’t take long for us to hash-out a deal to take him on as a PHP Sponsored Driver for the 2017 Drift Season.
Be sure to look out for him this season!! – we’ll be sure to get our own media at various events throughout the year.
